Each grid represents a Cross Stitch over two fabric threads.
Work the Satin stitches over four fabric threads for each row and down each side at the marked edges of your embroidery using perle cotton #8 in the color you have been using. The outer or top row will turn the corner, the inner or second row will not turn the corner. Instead this row will skip the corner and the Satin stitches will be worked down the sides of the embroidery inside the outer row of Satin stitches.
The center of this Satin stitched design can be filled with a Blackwork design as shown in the picture above and the chart below. For the Blackwork filling stitch I used a strand of the blue floss to make these Back stitches or Double Running stitches.
I started in the center of the large Satin stitched area and at the bottom of the top Satin stitch rows I used partial motifs to make it appear as if the design was woven into the embroidery fabric. On the second row of motifs there are eleven complete Blackwork motifs and two partial motifs across the embroidery, one partial motif is on either side of my embroidery. The block represents a Cross Stitch in the chart, you could use a bead instead or a different stitch.

Each block in this chart represents a Cross Stitch worked over two fabric threads.Heart Kloster Design with Raised Spider center

Start the heart design as shown on the chart below and centered embroidery. Use perle cotton #8 in the same color that you have been using. The diamond shaped element around the Heart Klosters is also done with perle cotton #8 over two fabric threads. I have a parallel Satin stitch around the Heart Kloster Border inside the diamond. I used two strands of blue floss for this parallel Satin stitch .

Each line on this chart represents a fabric thread.
Do not cut the threads in the center of this design.
For the Raised Spider Spoke use the six strands of the cotton floss to wrap the spokes. Do not cut any of any of the ground fabric away to make this stitch. Instead make three long Straight stitches across the interior of the motif for each spoke as shown in the diagram below. Please click on the "Raised Spider Spoke' topic for information on how to make a raised spider.

And just so you know you aren't seeing things I decided to cut this Heart motif spider out of the doodle cloth I practiced on to make it and appliqued it onto the sampler. The Elizabetheans did this all the time, called the designs slips, they cut the slips out of the ground fabric they were made on and stitched them onto something else, very practical people! The picture does not do it justice, it's a lovely effect on the embroidery. ©2002 Linda Fontenot, www.AmericanFolkArts.com
