Clover Leaf Flower
Before you begin this motif wrap all the bars starting at the far right center of the Kloster design where the red 1 is shown on the Bar chart shown below, wrap the bars diagonally.
I used #8 Perle Cotton throughout this design. Please read through all the instructions before you begin as there are some tips following the lesson.
Clover Leaf Petal
Bar Chart
Diagonal WrappingTo wrap the first bar, start at 1, go to 2, 3, 4, then go under the bar diagonally to 5, by stopping the wraps at the top of bar 4 and going from the 1 o'clock position to the 7 o'clock position on the left side of bar 5
Wrap down bars 5, 6, 7 and 8 then take the working thread under the back side of the Klosters and over to the new row and repeat your steps at 1, 2, 3 and 4 and so on until all the bars are wrapped.
The A, B, C, D intersections are where the petals of this motif will be made after you finish wrapping all the bars.
Diagram Clover Leaf Petal
This diagram shows you the wrapped bars at the A intersection of the Bar Chart.
Bar 2, Bar 3, Bar 6 and Bar 7 are the same as in the Bar Chart at the A intersection.
With your threaded tapestry needle begin the first petal at the star in the diagram below:
At the star take the threaded needle under Bar 3,
then over Bar 2
then under the Bar 7,
Come up at 1, and
take the threaded needle over Bar 7
then under Bar 2,
over Bar 3, and
under bar Bar 6.
At 2 take the threaded needle over Bar 6 and under Bar 3 and continue weaving over and under the bars until the petal of the flower is the size you would like it.
Finer Points
Make a copy of the diagram and turn it to suit your needs as you make the petals for the flower. Continue with the petals at the B intersection, then the C and D intersections. Of course, you can do any intersection next that you prefer.
Use a parked needle with about 36 inches of thread or perle cotton to make the Clover Leaf Flower and then the Squared Eye . When you finish a petal weave under it with the working thread until you are positioned for the start of the next petal or the Squared Eye. You may have to take the second half of thread from the parked needle through the back of the petals to get it into a working position. Generally the petal wraps over the wrapped bars of the gird are the easiest to slip the needle and working thread through for positioning the needle and thread for the next weave.
Experiment on your doodle cloth to see if you like this flower, it can be difficult to achieve even sizes for each petal. ©2003 Linda Fontenot www.AmericanFolkArts.com
