Arrowhead Stitch
![]()
This stitch is worked in two passes or two phases. For Julia's Antique Band Sampler I skipped down two fabric threads from the bottom of the Kloster Buds to start these rows of stitches using Perle cotton #8 ecru. I did both sizes on the sampler, starting with the smaller size, then skipped four fabric threads and did the larger size of the stitch.
Start both sizes of this stitch on the edge of the sampler by counting in either four fabric threads for the larger stitch or two fabric threads for the smaller stitch.
The chart below has the two sizes of this stitch, the smaller is over two fabric threads and the larger is over four fabric threads. Both versions of this stitch are worked the same way.

Each line of this chart represents a fabric thread.
On the left side of your embroidery bring your threaded needle:
up at 1 and down at 2,
come up at 3 and go down at 4,
then up at 5 and down at 6,
then up at 4, repeat steps 1 through 6 for all the stitches across the row to the right,
save steps 7 and 8 until later.
After you reach the edge of the row cross all your diagonal stitches going back across the embroidery,
come up at step 7,
and go down at step 8, then drop down four fabric threads and repeat these two steps to work the final diagonal stitch across each of the previous stitches.
By doing the stitches this way your row will look the same on the back of the embroidery as it does on the front.©2000 Linda Fontenot, www.AmericanFolkArts.com and www.OverTheMoonDesigns.comMy Garden has an Apple Tree
